Online crime has raised its ugly head in the city of Bethlehem. A young man pretended to be a young woman on the internet and established friendly ties with a large number of girls on social networking web sites. What is more, the man who pretended to be the girl behaved as if the girl was immoral and of loose character. He repeatedly sent lewd messages and requested lewd photographs of his girlfriends.
Surprisingly, this impersonation continued for more than a year. Many persons passed critical comments and judgments about the girl in question without realizing the fact that a man was manipulating her account. It was only when a counselor warned the girl and insisted that her activities should stop did the crime see daylight.
The man expressed remorse when he was placed in front of the court. However, the judge refused to sympathize stating that he had impersonated an innocent individual and had destroyed her character online. Social groups have called for the strictest punishment possible to ensure that it sets a precedent to scare others from committing the same crime.
There is also a call for spreading awareness about the importance of proper online behavior and the necessity to report such crimes as early as possible. Many girls preferred to break contact from the presumed female offender instead of bringing the matter to the authorities. Had they done so, this issue may have been sorted out a lot earlier. This would have helped prevent the girl from suffering the trauma that she had to endure.
